Assistance Required:
What do I do if I have an accident in my campervan in New Zealand?
If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident whilst on hire, please follow this procedure:
(a) At the Accident Scene you must:
1. Obtain the names and addresses of third parties and any witnesses.
2. Report the accident to police, regardless of estimated damage costs.
3. Not accept blame or insist the other party is at fault.
4. If possible, photograph damage to all vehicle(s) and registration number(s).
5. Phone us on (call 0800 788 558) with the accident details within 24 hours. We recommend a local sim to be able to contact us free of charge.
(b) At the Branch
1. You must produce your driver’s licence and provide a copy of the police report (if applicable) along with any supporting photographs.
2. You may be required to pay the cost of any Damage to the campervan (if applicable, in accordance with Vehicle Damage - Liability and Liability Reduction Option clause) and any other amount due in respect of any damage arising from an accident, loss or damage. This amount is payable at the time of reporting ‘the event’ and not at completion of the Rental Period.
3. You will need to pay us the daily rental rate for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs [demurrage].
4. One of our Local Host will ensure the Motor Vehicle Accident Report is completed clearly and accurately, and signed by you.
(c) Exchange Vehicle
1. The availability of an exchange vehicle is not guaranteed; providing a replacement campervan to complete your holiday is subject to availability, your location, accident liability and remaining hire duration. Additional charges may also be incurred (see below).
2. If a replacement campervan is required as the result of an accident, you will be responsible for making your own way to the nearest branch or pickup location, at your own cost.
3. We may offer you the option of paying an “Exchange Vehicle Relocation Fee” to send a driver to deliver the exchange vehicle to your location.
4. You will need to pay for any costs relating to delivery of an exchange campervan as a result of any single Vehicle accident. This charge applies irrespective of any Liability Reduction Option taken.
5. If an exchange vehicle is provided, any Liability Reduction Option purchased at the commencement of the Rental Period may, at our discretion (including where it considers the exchange vehicle is at risk of damage) be terminated with effect from the date of provision of the exchange vehicle (and you will not be charged the additional per day charge in respect of the Liability Reduction Option from that date). If we exercise our right to terminate the Liability Reduction Option, a Liability Deposit will be required to be paid by the Customer at the time of provision of the exchange vehicle. If you did not purchase the Liability Reduction Option at the commencement of the Rental Period and paid a Liability Deposit, the Customer acknowledges that a new Liability Deposit will be required to be paid for the exchange vehicle.
(d) Time Frame for Settlement of Customer Liability Claims
1. We shall use our best endeavours to ensure that any money due back to you is forwarded as quickly as possible, however third party claims can take months or even years to resolve. We cannot force the destiny of these claims, and we ask that you acknowledge that handling of these claims is up to our Insurer and the third party, whether they be insured or not.
2. We agree to refund any Liability Deposit within 60 days of receiving final resolution and payment relating to third party claims.
3. For information regarding outstanding claims or Liability Deposit refunds please contact the Claims Department on 0064 9 255 0620 during office hours.
4. We ask that you agree to provide all reasonable assistance to us in handling any claim including providing all relevant information and attending Court to give evidence.
Important Note: Under no circumstances should you attempt to start or drive a vehicle that has been involved in an accident, damaged by rollover, water submersion or any other means without permission from us.
What if my campervan needs repairs?
Repairs up to $100 may be effected without authorisation and will be reimbursed upon presentation of a receipt provided that you were not directly responsible for the damage. For amounts over $100, we will need to be informed in advance. Receipts must be submitted for any repair or the claim will not be paid.

On Road Care NZ: 0800 788 558 (we recommend a local sim to be able to contact us free of charge)
Where to Stay:
Do I need to stay at campground/holiday park?
Provided the campervan you have rented has toilet facilities on board you are allowed to 'freedom camp' in designated sites. Please obey local signage and regulations, and ask at local information centres [look for blue i-SITE signs or visitor information signs in each town] for suitable places to stay. Please do be aware that you may be fined for 'freedom camping' in non-designated areas.
To fully charge your campervan's auxiliary [house] battery you will need to plug the vehicle into 240V mains power regularly. We recommend you stay in holidays parks to charge the battery at a minimum every second night.
We recommend downloading the thl Roadtrip app for android or iPhone - you'll get up to date information on where to stay, places of interest on the road, as well as helpful locations such as public bathrooms, dump stations & supermarkets.
How long can I 'freedom camp' for?
If you plan on freedom camping, your camper needs to be Certified Self Contained. How long you freedom camp depends on what facilities you wish to use in your campervan. The more equipment you use the quicker you will use the available charge on your house battery. To prolong your freedom camping experience, try to keep the fridge closed as much as possible. A good tip is to keep the fridge filled, even by using recycled bottles filled with water, and turning the fridge to a lower setting. Parking the vehicle in the shade can also reduce power consumption.
We recommend plugging in and recharging your house battery every second night at a powered site to maintain the lights, fridge and water pump.
Why do I need to go to a campsite?
Campsites offer facilities to empty your waste water and toilet cassette, and many also offer laundry facilities to refresh your towels and sheets.
To fully charge your campervan's auxiliary [house] battery you will need to plug the vehicle into 240V mains power regularly. We recommend you stay in holidays parks to charge the battery at a minimum every second night.
Do we have to book campgrounds in advance of our arrival?
If you are travelling during peak periods such as school holidays, public holidays and long weekends, it is best to book your campground in advance to avoid disappointment.
Dump Stations:
How often should we dump our waste?
When it comes to the disposing of your waste , it is vital to ensure this is done in a safe and environmentally friendly way. We recommend you dump your black water (contents from the toilet cassette) and the grey water (water from the shower and sink) every 2 or 3 days, most holiday parks have dump stations available to their guests.
Ferries in New Zealand:
Do I need to book a ferry crossing in New Zealand?
As New Zealand is made up of two main islands, it will be necessary for you to book a ferry crossing if you are travelling from the North to South Island or vice versa. It’s super convenient, all you have to do is drive on, enjoy the scenic cruise and then drive off. Ferry crossings take approximately three hours with several sailings each day.
This will actually give you an enjoyable break from driving - it's a spectacular ferry crossing between Wellington in the North Island and Picton in the South Island. In fact, you are bound to see some scenic highlights along the way - Wine Spectator magazine calls it "one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world". Lap up the views from the ferry decks of the beautiful Wellington Harbour, the rugged North Island coastline, and the aquamarine Cook Strait and stunning Marlborough Sounds. You can even have a meal or keep the kids entertained with new release movies if needs be. The Club Class lounge is an option if you feel like treating yourself to a private lounge with couch seating, complimentary newspapers, magazines and refreshments.
It's best to check-in around 60 minutes prior to departure when you're crossing with a campervan. We can take care of your ferry booking once you have decided what day and time will suit you best. If you're wondering how much the ferries in New Zealand cost, this will depend on the length of your campervan or motorhome.
We recommend that you book well ahead of your holiday, especially if you are travelling during the November to March summer season or over busy events. Please contact our Booking Hosts if you wish to book your ferry crossing.

Should you wish to travel on an unsealed road that is greater than twelve kilometres in length to access a recognised campground special permission can be arranged pending road condition, weather and distance. Please contact your local representative to discuss. Vehicles shall not be driven on:
Skippers Road (Queenstown)
Crown Range Road (Queenstown)
Ball Hut Road (Mt. Cook)
Ninety Mile Beach (Northland)
North of Colville Township (Coromandel Peninsula)
Vehicles are not permitted on all ski field access roads in both the North and South Islands from 01 June to 31 October. This means you cannot drive your vehicle up to a ski field car park and/or any part of the access road to the ski field.
You will be responsible for all damage if travelling on these roads.
Should you breach the road restriction rules by taking a vehicle on a restricted road, a fee of $300 on each occasion that is identified will apply.
Can you restrict where the campervan can go due to certain conditions?
We value your well being, and for safety purposes, we reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to restrict vehicle movements in certain areas due to:
- adverse road or weather conditions;
- the distance to nominated destinations in relation to the length of the hire period; and
- any concerns we, our employees or agents may have regarding driver experience or ability.
We will advise you on pick-up of any travel restrictions known at that time.
Are there speed restrictions on my campervan?

About your campervan
Do I need to bring a plug adaptor?
The vehicles are equipped with AU/NZ electrical sockets, so if you are coming from overseas you will need an adaptor. Plug adaptors may be purchased at the airport terminal or from our branch.
Will my campervan have a television?
Television is not included in your package. However there is an LCD screen with built-in DVD player in some campervans.
Can I recharge my laptop in the vehicle?
Yes, however you will need to be connected to a 240V power supply and simply use a power socket in the vehicle.
Can my campervan in New Zealand carry a bike rack ?
Yes, a bike rack can be fitted to selected New Zealand campervans picking up in Auckland, Christchurch or Queenstown only at an additional charge, however this needs to be booked 48 hours in advance. Maximum weight for bikes transported on our bike racks is 15kg per bike. Please refer to our additional hire items. Hire of bikes is only available with pick-ups and drop-offs in Christchurch.
Due to weight restrictions, e-bikes are not permitted to be transported on our bike racks.
How do I empty the toilet?
Please have a look at our Campervan 'how to' video clip for Operating the Toilet.
The toilet in your vehicle has a cartridge underneath that catches the waste. The cartridge requires a toilet chemical to break down the waste and keep it odour free. These toilet chemicals can be purchased for $2.50 each from our branch.
We recommend you empty the toilet cartridge every 1 - 2 days (at an authorised dump point) and place a new chemical inside after emptying. The toilet cartridge is located in a lockable compartment outside the vehicle, adjacent to the bathroom. Under the toilet cartridge are wells that collect any overflow of waste.
These wells are dry and clean when you collect your vehicle from our branch. They need to also be returned this way.
There are several steps you can take to avoid any overflow of waste into these wells.
- Always make sure the toilet shutter is fully open when you use your toilet. If it is not open the waste will seep around the cartridge instead of going into your cartridge. The waste will then end up in the wells underneath.
- Always ensure the toilet shutter is fully closed when not in use. Just the motion of driving can cause waste to spill over the top outlet. This spillage will end up in the wells below.
- After emptying the toilet cartridge, ensure the cartridge is pushed in all the way, and then adjusted back so it sits flush behind the plastic lip. If the cartridge does not line up properly with the toilet shutter, waste will end up seeping aroWill my campervan have a power socket?und the cartridge and underneath into the wells.
- Empty the toilet every 1 – 2 days and before driving. A full cartridge will overflow through the top seals and seep around the cartridge and into the wells underneath.
- When you empty the toilet, check the wells underneath for any overflow. Wash and dry wells if there is any waste in them.
If the wells under the toilet cartridge are full, you will get overflow of waste coming into the bathroom floor area. This can be quite unpleasant for the hirer and our branch staff on return of the vehicle.
If you do not maintain the toilet during your hire and either the wells or cartridge are returned full, you will be asked to clean them or charged a $125 toilet cleaning fee.

Can we bring our pet with us on holiday?
If you are travelling in a Britz or Mighty campervan you can bring up to 2 well-behaved, registered dogs or cats on holiday.
A pet service fee of $299 will apply.
Pets must have been treated for fleas and be controllable. We recommend that you plan ahead, checking that dogs are permitted at your intended destinations and campgrounds in advance. At pick-up and drop-off, we appreciate you ensuring that your pet is secure on a lead and is supervised by an adult outside of our branch. Please check that your furry friends are clean and dry before entering the campervan and don't leave your pet unattended in the vehicle. While travelling, you must safely restrain your pets in the rear of the vehicle, avoiding the possibility of distracting the driver.
Please note that costs arising from damage and soiling caused by pets is not covered by the liability reduction option. These costs are the responsibility of the hirer.
If you are travelling in a maui motorhome animals are not permitted, with the exception of registered guide dogs, and permission needs to be arranged prior to rental. If an animal is allowed in your campervan additional fees may be applied to deep clean the interior.
How does the diesel heating work in New Zealand?
There is a video about operation of both gas and diesel heaters in our Campervan 'how to' section.
Our In Vehicle Tablet also includes information about operating your diesel heater.
A minimum of 11.5 volts is required on your auxiliary [house] battery for ignition, there needs to be more than a quarter tank of diesel in your fuel tank. Turn dial to full for 5 minutes before resetting to a moderate temperature. Generally it will take 1 litre of diesel to heat your motorhome for 4 hours, to a moderate temperature.
If you have problems please contact our On Road Assist team, phone 0800 788 558. (We recommend a local sim to be able to contact us free of charge.)
How long will the gas bottle last?
Gas bottle sizes and gas operated equipment differs with different campervans. Campervans with gas operated cooking, heating and water systems will use gas quicker than campervans with only gas cooking. If you run out of gas, you can swap a bottle at many service stations, The Warehouse, Mitre 10 and other outlets. If you have Pre Purchased Gas or the Express Return Pack then you don't need to return your campervan with a full gas bottle.
How many towels are included in the campervan?
We provide 1 towel per person. These towels are bath towels, and a shower mat is also included for the toilet / shower vehicles. All vehicles come with a tea towel as part of the kitchen general living equipment.
There are seven of us but one is a baby, can we book a 6 berth?
No, there are only 6 seat belts available in a six berth. Each person in the vehicle needs to have their own seatbelt, children need to be restrained in an approved child or booster seat.
Can we plug the camper into a normal house power outlet?
Government regulations do not allow for connection directly into a standard 240V plug in a house or garage with a 3 pin plug. There is the possibility of overheating and fire at the plug if demand for power is high from the campervan, such as the use of toasters, kettles etc. all at the same time. If a fire occurs as a result of plugging directly into a house, you will be liable for any damage. Campgrounds use a 3 phase source of power supply, your vehicle is equipped with this and you can plug directly in to mains power at any campsite.
How much tread depth should vehicle tyres have?
Vehicles under 4.5 tonne gross vehicle mass are legally required to have at least 1.5mm of tread remaining in all the principal grooves (i.e. the wide main grooves in the centre part of the tread).
These grooves have tread wear indicators in them and the tyre should not be worn so much that the tread wear indicators contact the road.
Our minimum allowed tread depth is 3.0mm, double the legal limit.
Other countries have very similar minimum tread depth requirements. 1.5mm or 1.6mm is well accepted globally as the minimum allowable tread depth for passenger and van tyres.
How long will my house [auxiliary] battery last?
It all depends on a number of things for example, use of lights, entertainment systems and the number of times the fridge is opened. Some of our vehicles have solar panel backup, which helps restore the living area battery when parked, but can’t keep up if everything is operating. A general rule of thumb is that if you drive a few hours every day, the alternator will help give the battery a top up charge. If you flatten the battery completely in the living area it will not affect the driving battery, however you will need to plug the vehicle into 240V mains power for the battery to fully recharge. We recommend you stay in Holiday Parks to charge the battery at a minimum every second night.
What works when my campervan is not connected to a 240V power supply?
When the auxiliary (house) battery has a healthy charge [11-14V] the following equipment will operate:
- fridge
- lights
- water pump
- entertainment
along with ignition for the water heater and diesel heater.
The following require a 240V power connection to operate:
- electric jug
- microwave
- 240V electric sockets
What is the storage capacity in my campervan?
All vehicles have storage compartments, however we suggest that you travel with soft foldable cases as there is no room to store large hard cases.
Do you offer Wi-Fi for my hire in New Zealand?
No.
