How old do I have to be to rent a campervan in New Zealand?
Drivers must be 21 years of age or more. Some campervan companies permit drivers aged between 18 – 20 years to drive sleepervans or smaller campervans. If you are between 18 – 20 years old, please contact our reservations team at bookings@rentcampervan.co.nz to check which campervans you can drive.
What type of licence do I need to drive a campervan?
A current and full motor vehicle driver’s licence is required and must be produced upon vehicle collection. Should a foreign licence be in a language other than English, it must be accompanied by an accredited English translation. The translation must be provided by an authorised translation service or a diplomatic representative at a high commission, embassy or consulate, or the authority that issued your overseas licence (an International Driving Permit may be acceptable as a translation if in English).
Do all drivers need to be present at the branch at pick-up?
All drivers are required to show their driver licence to the branch in person prior to driving the vehicle. At pick-up is preferred, however guests may visit the branch prior to pick-up to show their driver licence if they are unable to be there on the day.
How much does it cost to rent campervan in New Zealand?

When's the best time of year to campervan rental in New Zealand?
If you are looking for lot of sunshine consider travelling between December to February. March-April and September to November are considered shoulder season with pleasant climate. If you are want tourist spots to yourself or are love winter activities, hire campervan between May to August. Prices are low during winters and there are several deals for off season.
Where can I rent campervan in New Zealand?
There are branches in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown. Most branches are conveniently located close to the airport.
Are one way rentals possible?
Yes, most of suppliers has depots in multiple cities and therefore allows one way rental. One way rentals have minimum hire days depending upon the drop off city and also incur one way fees.
What type of fuel do the campers use?
Campervans are either petrol or diesel. Please check vehicles specification while making enquiry or booking.
What is Road User Tax/Road User Charge recovery fee?
The Road User Charge Recovery Fee is a government imposed tax, payable on diesel vehicles.
Are campervans auto or manual?
We have both auto and manual transmission campervans. You can check whether the campervan for rent in New Zealand is auto or manual transmission from the vehicle specifications.
What all is included in my hire campervan New Zealand?
Most campervans are equipped with bedding and linen kit, kitchen equipment and personal kit for your campervan holiday. You can also hire camping chairs, table, heater/fan, GPS, toilet chemical kit, etc at additional cost.
Will I be charged per kilometer?
Standard rental price includes unlimited kilometers.
Is there a minimum hire period?
A minimum hire of 7 days (for same location) is required to rent campervan in Australia. During events like Bathurst 1000 (Sydney) or MotoGP race on Phillip Island (Melbourne) a minimum hire of 10 days is required whilst during Christmas and New Year period, this could be anywhere between 10-14 days. For one-way rental, each campervan supplier has their own minimum hire requirement.
Are campervan branches open 7 days a week all year round?
Campervan branches are open Mon-Sun from 8:30am to 4:00pm during peak season whilst off peak season, branches operate for under restricted hours on Saturday and are closed on Sundays.
What are the depot timings?
Depots are open between 8:30am to 4:30pm. Campervans should be picked up and dropped off no later than 3:30pm.
How are rental days calculated?
Unlike the hourly rate used when renting a car or nightly rates used for hotel booking, Campervans are hired on a per calendar day basis, for example picking up a vehicle at 4.00pm on day 1 and dropping off at 8.30am on day 6 is a 6 day rental.
Are there road restrictions on where I can drive campervan?
2WD Campervans can only be driven on sealed/bitumen roads. The exception is well maintained access roads of upto 8-10 kilometres to recognised campgrounds, depending on your chosen campervan supplier’s conditions. What if I have an accident in our Campervan?
Report the accident as soon as possible (within 24 hours) to the rental provider and fill out an Accident Report. Full details of what to do and which no. to report accident on will be in the kit provided by the Campervan Rental company when you pick up your vehicle.
What happens in case of breakdown?
Yes, most Campervan suppliers do. On Road Care team is available 24/7, please phone toll-free number provided in your rental kit any time within 24 hours to give them the opportunity to solve the issues. We do not accept liability for any claims submitted after this period.
What do we need to do prior to returning our Campervan hire in New Zealand?
Please ensure that rubbish is thrown away, the floor has been swept and that your campervan does look tidy before you return it. If it's not returned in a respectable condition we may charge you a cleaning fee. Please remember that smoking is not permitted in your campervan and that a cleaning fee also applies to any smoking related cleaning.
Do I have to empty the waste water and toilet?
Yes. Please ensure that your waste water tank and toilet cassette are emptied at an authorised dump point found at most campgrounds prior to returning your campervan.
What should I know before returning my Campervan Rental in New Zealand?
Campervans should be returned cleaned and fuel tank and gas bottle should be full at the time of vehicle return unless a pre-paid package is purchased.
Can I freedom Camp in New Zealand?
If your campervan is Certified Self Contained, you are able to freedom camp in the designated areas. Please obey local signage and regulations, and ask at local information centres [look for blue i-SITE signs or visitor information signs in each town] for suitable places to stay. Please do be aware that you may be fined for 'freedom camping' in non-designated areas. Always carry your waste along with you and leave no trace.
